Pens with silver bands and identical styling

Pens with silver bands and identical styling

I got out in the shop this week and got a couple new pens made.  They are both identical style.  Both have silver bands and both are medium sized.  I'm hoping to start becoming more consistent with my pens where I can offer a few different named models instead of having every pen be a "one off".  Below you will see the beginnings of my efforts towards consistency.  I am thinking about calling this the "Hadar" model named after the tiny little town I live next to in Nebraska.  I am still also working on a improved version of a...

I've been working on a tricky special order.

I've been working on a tricky special order.

For the last couple days I have been finishing up a tricky special order.  I was asked to make a replica of a Franklin Cristoph Panther model 40.  My task was to make roughly the same pen out of customer chosen materials with a couple of adjustments.  The pen itself needed to be about .75 inches longer and the cap about .125 inches shorter.  The main goal was to get the very long section (1.125 inches) included in the build and have it look essentially the same as the FC Panther model 40.  My first try was a little...

I made a couple of sisters/brothers this week

I made a couple of sisters/brothers this week

Sometimes its fun to take what would otherwise be ordinary material and try to make an extraordinary result.  I wanted to make a red pen and not necessarily a plain red pen.  So I got this really cool shimmery black blank and made a red pen and an opposing black pen in identical styles with opposing colors on their respective parts.  It might just be easier to look at the picture :).  I have also been working on Nib grinding.  I don't know if you can see above, but I ground a broad nib to a cursive italic.  I have...

I'm working on figuring out how to do skinny pens.

I'm working on figuring out how to do skinny pens.

As I try to improve the quality of my pens it seems like the most important ingredient is feedback from the fountain pen community at large.  With this in mind I did an informal survey on facebook and I feel like I got a lot of good information.   I learned that people don't always like the crazy flamboyant colors found on some of the alumilite and acrylic blanks I like to use.  Sometimes people just want a nice conservative colored well made smooth writing pen.  I have a couple that will fit this bill in the works right now.  I...

3 New Pens Up

3 New Pens Up

Got 3 new pens made this weekend.  They are all similar in style.  All are medium sized and make great carry around pens.  I have been experimenting with styles lately and have started getting attached to a small pointed finial detail on both ends of the pen.  All the pens I just finished have this detail.  I hope to come out with some actual named models of pen soon.  I have been making them however I feel for the past 10 years.  I think its time to start having standard models that I can offer.  It will also make...
